Hyundai experimented with the engines in the I40 throughout its lifecycle. There were petrol and diesel engines on offer but later on the petrol engines were withdrawn due to the lack of popularity and it proved to be the right decision as the diesel engines were better anyway.

The petrol range started from the Gamma 1.6 GDi that produced 133hp at 165 NM. It was capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in 11.6 seconds and was able to reach 121 mph top speed. NU 2.0 MPi was the middle range engine that produced 165hp at 6500 and was able to shift from     0-62mph in 10.6 seconds with top speed of 125mph. the range topping engine in petrol was Nu 2.0 GDi that was able to churn out 176hp at 6500 and with manual transmission it took 9.6 seconds to accelerate from 0-62mph topping at 125mph top speed.

The more popular choice of engines was without doubt the diesel engines that were a perfect blend of fluid performance and efficiency. UII 1.7 CRDi was able to produce 113 hp at 4000 and was able to accelerate from 0-62mph in only 12.6 seconds reaching 118mph top speed. A more powerful version of the same diesel engine was the UII 1.7 CRDi High that was able to produce 137hp at 4000 and was quick enough to accelerate from 0-62 at 10.5 seconds with top speed of 124 mph. both types of engines were provided both manual and automatic transmissions.
